Overly optimistic. 28.3.19

Overcast night and day break, only the slightest NE breeze at times.

Linnet in Shooters.

Another very quiet visit this morning, obvious migrant activity confined to 5 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest and a single Wheatear near the track up towards Belle Tout Lighthouse.

Always at this time of year I find myself being too optimistic forgetting that my first Ring Ouzel and Common Redstart haven’t come until early April and both numbers & diversity don’t really occur until we get into April proper. That said, given the overcast weather and light winds, it is a little disappointing something else hasn’t occurred beyond the usual suite of early common migrants.

A visit to Birling Gap at dusk where the recently ploughed field had attracted a single Wheatear, 2 White Wagtail, c 15 Pied Wagtail, c200 Herring Gull whilst overhead the yodelling call of Mediterranean Gulls alerted me to 3 fine adults passing high overhead to the back drop of a glorious sunset.
