Murky Woodcock 21.3.19

A continuation of the murky, low cloud conditions with a light W wind.

Belle Tout lighthouse just disappearing in the cloud.

Airborne Woodcock at Shooters Bottom.

With very low cloud continuing throughout the previous night, it was expected that migrant activity would be lower than yesterday and so it was.

Best picks were 2 Wheatear, 3 Firecrest (2 wood, 1 near Birling Gap), c15 Chiffchaff at various locations. c40 Meadow Pipit came in from the south while checking the lighthouse, evidence of some diurnal arrivals. At Shooters Bottom a female Merlin dashed through towards Hodcombe, 9 Redwing flew out of cover departing north and a Woodcock was flushed from under foot.

Wheatear at West Rise.

A walk over West Rise marsh didn’t yield any hirundines but did hold 4 splendid male Wheatear.
