A little fall 20.3.19

Relatively calm overnight light SW with broken cloud, by dawn higher points shrouded in low cloud wind strengthening  from the SW.

Wheatear in Shooters Bottom.

Best day of the spring so far with decent numbers of common migrants. I covered Birling, Belle Tout, Shooters Bottom and the Old trapping area.

Black Redstart in Belle Tout Wood.

Personal tally this morning was 5 Wheatear, 1 Black Redstart in BT Wood, a minimum of 35 Chiffchaff, 2 Firecrest, single Goldcrest BT Wood, 15 Redwing, 10 Blackbird (I saw at two arrive from great height). Meadow Pipit, although not really giving the impression of “passage” seem more numerous with about 20 birds seen. A lone Siskin flew aimlessly about in the murk, 2 Shelduck were prospecting at Birling, a usual spring occurrence although they don’t attempt to breed here.

Over all estimates of Chiffchaff (75) and Wheatear (14) collated from various other obs (JFC, RC).
