4th April 2017 First Redstart of the year

An overcast morning with rain, light west wind.

Looking west from Shooters towards Belle Tout lighthouse.

A brief visit to Shooters Bottom cut short due to heavy rain. Despite the previous day remaining enveloped in thick fog which was then followed by overnight rain, there must have been a window for birds to arrive during the night. A fine male Redstart was nice addition for the year, along with 2/3 Willow Warbler and 4 Chiffchaff making up numbers. 5 Redpoll went over west.

When I returned later in the day the sun had broken through and there was virtually no wind. Shooters held at least 10 Willow Warbler feeding in the late evening sunshine.

Willow Warbler.

Today is the first day this species has been seen in double figures, one of my favourites of spring for sure. Peak numbers usually occur mid month.
