A beautiful sunset & evening on the headland crowned by the appearance of a Nightjar behind Belle Tout wood at 21.15. It continued to feed low over head and frequently sat just meters from me. A wonderful experience, I’ve never heard them utter a soft “chup” call in flight before either. A male by the amount of white in the tail, it was also the first time I’ve come across a migrant Nightjar. Also great views of Badger and Tawny Owl this evening.
John Cooper kindly looked through the Beachy Head records and told me that it’s the 10th record of Nightjar since 1960, the first occurrence in spring and the first to be recorded since 1992!
I haven’t seen much of note over previous few days, best pick was a Hobby that frequented the Hollow 13th & 14th May.
